A good lamp changes the mood of a room more than almost any other piece of decor. But when you start looking for lamps in Pakistan, the choice can be overwhelming — mass-produced imports, market pieces with questionable wiring, and a handful of handmade options in between. What to look for when buying a table lamp

1. The right size for where it will sit

Measure first. For a bedside table, a lamp around 14–20 inches tall (including the shade) usually works. Next to a sofa, 20–26 inches keeps the light at a comfortable reading height. Consoles and entryways can take taller statement pieces. The base should never overhang the table.

2. The base material

Plastic and thin metal bases are cheap but can look dated quickly. Natural materials like terracotta and ceramic age well, feel substantial, and add texture to a room even when the lamp is switched off.

3. Wiring and fittings

Check the lamp holder, switch and cable quality before buying — this is where many low-cost lamps cut corners. A sturdy holder and a properly finished cable matter far more than they look.

4. The shade

Fabric shades in white, cream or natural tones give a soft, even glow. Darker or thicker shades direct light up and down instead, which suits accent lighting more than reading.

5. The bulb

For living rooms and bedrooms, a warm white LED (around 2700K–3000K) gives a cosy glow. LEDs also draw far less power, which matters if your lamp runs on a UPS during load-shedding.
