How to Choose a Table Lamp for Your Bedroom or Living Room
A table lamp does more than light a corner. The right one sets the mood of a whole room, and the wrong size or shade can make even a beautiful space feel off. Here's a simple guide to choosing a table lamp for your bedroom or living room, with real sizes from our own handmade terracotta lamps so you can picture them in your home.
1. Start with the height
Height is the most common mistake. A quick rule of thumb:
- Bedside tables: when you're sitting up in bed, the bottom of the lampshade should sit roughly at eye level. On a standard bedside table, a lamp around 14–20 inches tall usually works well.
- Side tables next to a sofa: the bottom of the shade should be close to your eye level when seated, so light falls on your book or phone, not in your eyes. Lamps around 20–26 inches are a good range.
- Consoles and entryways: taller is better here. A lamp of 25 inches or more gives presence and balances a wall or mirror.
For reference, our Mini Orb and Caramel Popcorn Mini are about 14.5 inches tall with the shade — ideal for bedside tables and small shelves. The Mellow (about 18 inches) and Orb (about 17 inches) sit in the middle, while the Cashew (about 24 inches), Slate (about 25 inches) and Oliva (about 26.5 inches) are made for sofas, consoles and statement corners.
2. Match the lamp to the table
The lamp base shouldn't overhang the table, and the shade should be a little narrower than the tabletop so it doesn't get bumped. On a small bedside table, a compact round base like the Mini Orb keeps space free for your phone and a glass of water.
3. Pick a finish that suits your room
- Calm, neutral rooms: soft lime-wash finishes like Cashew and Cloud blend in quietly and add texture without adding colour.
- Moody or darker interiors: textured and weathered pieces like Slate, Lunar and Oliva add depth.
- Earthy or green-toned rooms: the Rustic Olive brings in a calm olive shade.
- Modern, clean spaces: smooth matte designs with black or gold accents, like Mellow and Orb.
4. Single lamp or a pair?
Pairs create symmetry: one on each side of a bed or sofa instantly makes a room feel finished. A single lamp works best as a focal point on a console, desk or reading corner. Most of our lamps come as a single or a matching pair.
5. Choose the right bulb
For a cosy, warm glow in bedrooms and living rooms, go for a warm white LED bulb rather than a cool daylight one. LEDs also use far less electricity than old bulbs, which helps if your lamp runs on a UPS during load-shedding. (Bulbs are not included with our lamps, so you can choose the brightness you like.)
6. Why a handmade terracotta lamp?
Terracotta is a natural clay, and when it's shaped and finished by hand, each lamp carries small, natural variations in texture. That's what gives a handmade lamp character that mass-produced lighting can't copy. To keep it looking good, simply dust it with a dry cloth — no water.
